“If a child refuses to eat then his parents will persuade him to eat, albeit a little, and will then continue somehow to feed him, little by little, throughout the day so that his needs are fulfilled and he is satiated.  In this way they make sure that he does not fall ill.

We should adopt a similar style when dealing with our nafs. If it is not prepared to complete the ma‘mūlāt in one sitting, then persuade it to carry it out, little by little, throughout the day, so that we do not fall spiritually ill.”
