Strengthen your Power

“Without the usage of will power, there is no remedy for those sins which are related to passion and desire. The respected Shaykh Ashraf ‘Alī Thānwī rahmatullahi alayh would say that if a person is not willing to utilise his will power then not even a Prophet can save him from committing sin.

Through the usage of will power one can achieve great things. Take the example of a smoker who stops smoking from morning till evening in Ramaḍān. How? By utilising the willpower which is inherent within him! Similarly, every person has the ability to abstain from sins, if he would only use his will power.

By affiliating with a Shaykh and consulting with him one is able to develop and rejuvenate his will power so that he is able to use this great capacity and thus refrain from sin.”

Real Piety

“Rābi‘ah Baṣriyah rahmatullahi alayh used to say that people think that a friend of Allāh ta’ala is one who can fly in the sky, walk on water or perform other supernatural feats.

Birds fly in the air, fish swim in the water, yet that does not make them of an exceptional status or beloved to Allāh ta’ala!

In reality, one attains the special friendship of Allāh ta’ala by practising Dīn in its entirety.”

Don’t get Lost

Once, our respected Shaykh ḥafiẓahullāh was being escorted to a janāzah ṣalāh in another city. Both the Shaykh ḥafiẓahullāh and the driver were unfamiliar with the route from the masjid to the graveyard, and there was nobody else there to escort them.

The imām of the masjid was contacted who hastily arrived and asked them to follow his car. Within minutes they arrived at their destination.

Shaykh, not missing this opportunity, used this very incident to explain a very important point. He said,

“This is the exact example of tazkiyah; we all know where we need to reach, but without a capable guide who is familiar with the route, we cannot be sure if we are going in the right direction. Once we find an expert guide whom we trust and follow, we will reach our destination, Inshā’allāh.”

The New Year

“Having just completed the year 2011, the ‘New Year’ is seen and heard all around us. However, the question remains as to what should be a Muslim’s take on these events. Upon the passing of a year, the common trend is to celebrate; people have birthday parties, wedding anniversaries etc.

However, in certain spheres this is not the case; take the example of a businessman who at the end of the (financial) year will first take stock of the past year. He will meticulously go through the accounts of the past year taking into account every single penny. He will check to see if he made a profit, and if so then how can he make more in the coming year.

He will check his expenses: where did he spend his money? Can he make further savings? All of this is done so that he can make the coming year more profitable than the one that has passed.”

Reasons to be Thankful

“Whenever we are faced with a difficulty, we should tell ourselves that the reasons for exercising ṣabr (patience) are few, and the reasons for shukr (being grateful to Allāh ta’ala) are many because the Favours of Allāh ta’ala are far more in number than the few difficulties we are encountering.

For example if we have a head ache, then we should remind ourselves that only one part of the body is in pain, while the rest of the body is well and healthy. Thus there is only one reason to be patient and many reasons for being thankful.”
