“It is virtuous to walk to the masjid for salaah. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam said that for every step taken towards the masjid a reward is earned and a (minor) sin is forgiven.

The Sahabah radhiallahu anhum used to walk to the masjid taking short steps as they truly realised what Deen was.

We, on the other hand, go to the masjid by car, even if the masjid is nearby.”

1) Optional fasting

2) Tahajjud salaah”

“The main thing is to abstain from the disobedience of Allah. The nawaahi (Shar’i prohibitions) are of course concerned with this, but even the awaamir (Shar’i commands) are there to enable people to refrain from sins.

Take the example of salaah. Even though the command to establish salaah is a command to ‘do’ something, one of its main purposes is to enable people to avoid sins.

Allah says about it: ‘Verily, salaah prevents against illicit acts and sins.’ So we should try our utmost to refrain from disobeying Allah.

“Many people make the common mistake of only performing Salah, whereas what they should be doing is establishing Salah. In order to establish Salah, you must focus on three things:

“By appointing specific times for the Fardh Salaah, Allah ta’ala has taught us a very important principle: that of time management.

In order to read his salaah punctually a Muslim has to run according to a timetable and arrange his daily life efficiently.

This is why the Great Companion Umar radiyallahu ‘anhu would say:”

Whosoever is punctual in observing salaah will also be punctual in undertaking his other deeds.

“Having concentration in salaah entails being aware of the presence of Allah ta’ala and realising that Allah ta’ala is watching you.

Having concentration in salaah means you are conscious of what you are doing.

You no longer perform salaah as a matter of ritual, but are constantly alert and attentive towards what you are doing and reciting.”

“Ta’deel Arkaan is necessary in salaah. Ta’deel Arkaan means that a person performs salaah in such a way that when he goes into a posture his entire body becomes still, before going onto the next posture.

For example, when one goes in sajdah, the entire body should come to rest and become still in this posture. Only then should one progress to the next posture.”

“A common error in salaah is to not recite the Qur’aan audibly. Just imagining the words, or mentally reciting to oneself silently is not sufficient.

You should recite the Qur’aan in such a manner that your lips move and the words you are reciting can be heard by yourself.”

“1. Sihat: correct wording and pronunciation. One should not just say salamalaikum, but should recite it completely and correctly by saying as-salaamu ‘alaykum. By adding wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh the reward increases even more.

2. Sabqat: initiate the salaam, i.e. strive to outdo the other by being the first to make salaam, without considering whether the person you are greeting is younger or older, rich or poor, known to you or unknown.

3. Kathrat: salaam should be done in abundance. “

When it comes to a cricket or football match then everyone wants a front row seat. Yet when it comes to a gathering of deen very few are willing to come forward and sit near the front.

Does such behaviour not demonstrate that we value football and cricket more than we do our deen?
