“As the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam was born in the month of Rabī‘ul Awwal it is only natural to have an inclination to read, study and speak about the sīrah of the Prophet  sallalahu alayhi wasallam during this month.

However, a sign of true love is that one constantly thinks of the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam with similar devotion and love throughout the rest of the year also.”

“After repenting from sins and turning over a new leaf, some people experience flashbacks of sinful activities they had once been involved in. Shaytān instigates such flashbacks, intending them to cause disturbance and confusion. Many people are unsettled and worried about such thoughts.

It should be understood that if such thoughts come involuntarily, without a conscious effort to bring them to mind, one should not worry. No attention whatsoever should be paid to them. And because they cause hardship to a believer, patiently putting up with them entails reward.”

Pious Thoughts! Monday, August 24, 2009

“The reward and significance of tilawah of the Qur’an during Ramadhan is indeed great. Realising this, someone who is currently reading three juz per day may entertain the noble intention of reading six juz a day – not from tomorrow, but next Ramadhan! It would be no sin if he were to start reading six juz instead of three this very Ramadhan!

It is also noticed that before the advent of Ramadhan, many people realise that indeed they should engage in tilawah during the blessed month. However, with this noble thought in mind, they fail to do any tilawah during the remaining days of Sha’ban and wait for the first of Ramadhan. Just imagine how much reward they deprive themselves of!”

“1. If someone who is ill complains about it, then it is a sign of the illness being a punishment from Allah Subhanahu Wa ta’ala.

2. If an ill person accepts that the illness is from Allah ta’ala, and does sabr to please Allah, it is a sign that the illness is a means of wiping out sins and thus is a blessing in disguise.

3. If an ill person expresses gratefulness to Allah for having been given a small illness compared to what he could have been inflicted with, it is a sign that the person has not committed any sins that would make the illness a means of atonement; on the contrary, the illness is a means of elevating his rank in the court of Allah ta’ala.”

“Sometimes the thought of repenting from sin may cross the mind of a sinful person, but he will think, “I am a sinner. How will Allah forgive me?” Remember, this is a trick of Shaytaan.

The thought of repentance is a guest sent from Allah, and therefore should be welcomed and entertained. The way to do this is to put this thought into practice by repenting to Allah.

Remember it is Allah ta’ala who sent this thought. Therefore one should take it to mean that He wants one to repent.”

“If a person assesses himself, he will find in himself some shortcomings and some good qualities. To create humility in our hearts we should attribute all the shortcomings in our lives to ourselves and we should attribute all the good qualities that we have to Allah ta’ala.

In other words, we should think that anything good we do is only through the Fadhl of Allah and whatever wrong or evil we see in ourselves is due to our own selves.”

“Having good thoughts about a fellow Muslim brings reward while being suspicious of a fellow Muslim incurs sin; so why leave out what brings reward and do what invites the wrath of Allah ta’ala?

In fact, if someone else has done wrong then and made tawbah that person will have cleared his slate with Allah ta’ala, while we continue piling sins on ourselves by having  suspicious thoughts about him.”

“When the thought of doing a good deed comes to mind you should treat it as a guest. Carrying out the good deed corresponds to honouring and entertaining your ‘guest’. Just as you give your full attention to guests when they arrive and put aside anything else you were busy with, you should direct your attention to carrying out a good deed when the thought of it comes to mind.

As for when a thought of doing an evil deed comes to mind, it should be spurned and rejected every time.

Now, evil deeds are like evil people and have no hesitation in returning time and again even after you ignore them. On the other hand, good deeds are like good and honourable people: if you ignore and reject a good deed when it comes to mind, it will not return.

Therefore, you should never ignore or reject thoughts of doing good deeds.”
