“Upon observing a speed camera, a driver immediately slows his car, because he is aware that he is being watched; he fears the consequences of speeding.
Likewise a person who undergoes spiritual training will always feel the presence of Allāh ta’ala and will always remember, wherever he may be: ‘Allāh ta’ala is watching me!’

“Imagine the following situation: you are in the safety of a room when two people come and give you two pieces of contradictory news; one says that there is a venomous snake outside and the other says there is not. What would you do in such a situation?
You would take every precaution and stay indoors following the first person’s advice until you were 100% sure the second opinion was correct. If this is our attitude in regards to worldly harms, should we not, when we are in doubt as to whether something is halāl or harām, take the precautious measure too, until we are 100% satisfied?”

“The common definition of taqwaa is to abstain from the disobedience of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa. When a person tries to do this it is a struggle, known as mujahadah. After months and years of struggle, real taqwa is achieved, wherein Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa puts the light of taqwa in the heart. When this happens, you will no longer have to struggle to avoid sins as before, but you will be repelled by them.
It is like the prospect of walking through a narrow gully with damp and filthy walls. You will be repelled from the very thought, but even if you do and some filth touches your clothing, you will not rest until it is washed off. When you have real taqwa you are repelled by sins, and if you do ever slip up and commit a sin, you will not wait about but make tawbah immediately.
There is no better time to acquire real taqwa and become muttaqi. If you value Ramadhan, it will make you muttaqi.

“Taqwaa is not abundant worship, taqwaa is refraining from sins, both major and minor. With taqwaa, one’s heart is made grief-proof. As the respected Shaykh Hakim Akhtar hafizahullah says:
If the creation of Allah ta’ala can make a watch water proof, then cannot the Creator make the hearts of His friends (i.e. those who adopt taqwaa) grief-proof?

“A person doing mujahadah against his nafs when tempted by sin is not true taqwaa; true taqwaa is when the heart has hatred for sin and wants to stay well away from it.”

“Some people desire to acquire the friendship of Allah without having to exert any effort or make any sacrifice. If the friendship of Allah could be acquired by just wishing, there would be no reward in it, for we would have acquired it without any effort on our behalf.
Remember things don’t just happen. You have to make them happen.

“We need to aspire to the state wherein we think of ourselves as lowly while our behaviour is such that we are revered and thought of highly by the people. This mindset has been taught to us by the Prophet sallalahu alayhi wasallam in a du’aa:
O Allah, make me small in my own eyes and great in the eyes of others.

“When some people see their services for Deen rewarded, in the form of seeing those they made efforts on coming closer to Deen, they feel happy and content, yet remain negligent regarding their own spiritual condition.
Remember, we will only benefit from being a cause of others entering Jannah if we ourselves enter Jannah. If, Allah forbid, we ourselves are deprived of Jannah due to our negligence and sin, there is no question of benefiting in the hereafter from our services for Deen.
Take the example of a pension scheme: the contributions a worker makes all his life will only be realised when he reaches pensionable age. If he dies before then, he will not see a penny and his hopes of benefiting in his old age will come to nothing.”
