The key to acquiring the love of Allāh ta’ala is:

1. Adopting the company of the pious (especially one’s shaykh).
2. Abstaining from sins.
3. Being punctual with one’s ma‘mūlāt (prescribed practices).

“The keys to acquiring the love of Allāh ta’ala are:

1. Adopting the company of the pious (especially one’s shaykh).
2. Abstaining from sins.
3. Being punctual with one’s ma‘mūlāt (prescribed practices).

When someone enters the company of his shaykh, his heart is kindled with the Love of Allāh. However, when he leaves that blessed company, the flame of love is threatened by the gusting winds of the environment around him. If, affected by these winds, a person were to commit a sin, the love of Allāh ta’ala would be extinguished. It is therefore necessary to safeguard yourself from sins.

Another necessity for keeping the flame of love kindled is fuel, which in this case is the remembrance of Allāh ta’ala prescribed by one’s shaykh in the form of ma‘mūlāt. Thus, punctuality in attending the company of one’s shaykh, abstinence from sins and completing one’s ma‘mūlāt are necessary steps towards securing the Love of Allāh.”

“Shaykh Abrar-ul-Haq rahmatullaahi alayh states that meeting with one’s Shaykh serves to rekindle the fire of the love of Allah ta’ala within one’s heart.

Prescribed practices are the fuel that keeps the fire burning.”

Shining Hearts Tuesday, September 8, 2009

“Take a mirror that has been lying around and is covered in dust and put it out in the sunshine next to a clean polished mirror. The sunlight will strike them both equally, and both will shine, yet the polished mirror will be dazzlingly bright. It will give a true reflection of the sun, whereas the other will just give off a dull shine.

The pious friends of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa make such efforts on their hearts that they become pure and clean. They then receive true ma’rifah (recognition) of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa. The hearts of sinners are dulled by sins and so cannot acquire true recognition of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa.”

“Whoever intends to build a relationship with a pious person should do so for the sake of Din, not dunya. We should have the belief that the pious friends of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa are aware of the pitfalls along the road to Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa, and so by developing a close relationship with them we will be able to tread the straight path and acquire the pleasure of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa.

We should not attach ourselves to them for worldly gain, thinking that their du’as and attention will solve all life’s problems as they crop up, or that through their barakah our children will remain on the right track. We should have concern for our own spiritual condition!”

The Right Programme for Ibadah Saturday, August 22, 2009

“Ibadah is one thing, trying to reach Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa is another. People do lots of ibadah in Ramadan, but they tend to do it as they please, without any objective or guidance.

Their condition can be likened to someone who wants to get fit, and so enthusiastically starts to diet and exercise, but only lasts a few days before giving up. If they were to consult a dietician, they would be given a diet and exercise programme that would enable them to achieve their goal.

Similarly, those who try to worship Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa according to their own programme of ibadah will not reach their objective. The task of a shaykh is to ensure that the mureed reaches his objective – the pleasure and ma’rifah of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa – and so instructs and guides him in his ibadah.”

“If a mirror has dust on it, no reflection will be seen, but if it is clean then there will be a reflection.  In the same manner, our hearts are mirrors; if we clean them with the dhikr of Allah ta’aalaa before going into the company of our shaykh then a reflection of our shaykh’s heart will fall on our hearts.”

“When a person connects himself to a shaykh but his intentions are insincere, then although the shaykh’s heart will emanate spirituality, it will not enter his heart.

The situation is similar to someone wishing to collect rainwater, who places an upturned bucket outside during a heavy downpour.

Just as the torrent of rain will never ever fill an upturned vessel, the spirituality of the shaykh will never fill an insincere person’s heart.

Having corrupt intentions means the vessel of the heart is upurned and unable to receive any benefit from a shaykh.”

“Haji Imdadullah Makki rahmatullahi alayh used to say that the Mercy and Love of Allah ta’aalaa descends on that person who gains a place of love in the heart of a shaykh.

The reason is that the Mercy and Love of Allah ta’aalaa continuously descends on the heart of the shaykh, so when someone else’s love permeates the heart of the shaykh then he too becomes the recipient of Allah’s Mercy and Love.”

“It is an unfortunate state of affairs that in today’s day and age we establish connections with the mashaaikh and pious elders solely for worldly benefit.

We acquire worldly benefit through their wisdom and experience, yet remain unconcerned about attaining anything of their spirituality.

A mureed can and should ask his shaykh for guidance on worldly matters, as many worldly matters somehow relate to Deen, but the predominant factor in his connection with his shaykh should be Deen.

Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanwi rahmatullahi alayh states that the mureed who takes guidance from his shaykh on worldly matters only is like a person who visits a goldsmith to get his shoes mended.”
