“Shaytan adorns our good deeds for us. He places our good deeds, e.g. performance of Fajr Salah, Ishraq and Chaasht, at the forefront of our minds, but sweeps our sins under the carpet. We are aware, and pleased, that we went to the masjid for salah, but are we aware of how many sins we did on the way, e.g. casting lustful glances.

That is why we need to assess ourselves daily – a practice known as muhasabah. If we do not assess ourselves, we will not realise our faults.”

“In order to be regular with tilawah we need to fix a time for it daily, just like we have fixed times for other things, e.g. breakfast. I remember as a child back in India, how the entire household would complete their tilawah before breakfast, i.e. we had a fixed time for tilawah.

In those days it was not unusual for people to do tilawah even before Fajr. I remember walking to the masjid for Fajr Salah and hearing the sound of tilawah coming from the houses we passed.

“Daily muhaasabah (stocktaking) of one’s deeds has many benefits. One of Shaytaan’s ploys is to make us concentrate on our good deeds, which leads to ‘ujb (vanity) and kibr (pride).

With daily muhaasabah, shukr (gratitude) for being given the ability to do good deeds increases, with the result that Allah ta’ala grants the ability to do more.

“If a person assesses himself, he will find in himself some shortcomings and some good qualities. To create humility in our hearts we should attribute all the shortcomings in our lives to ourselves and we should attribute all the good qualities that we have to Allah ta’ala.

In other words, we should think that anything good we do is only through the Fadhl of Allah and whatever wrong or evil we see in ourselves is due to our own selves.”

“Self-assessment leads to self-recognition and one who recognises one’s self, recognises Allah ta’ala. This is the first step to rectification. As one’s own faults and evils become apparent, one will not be proud; one will drown in humility and Allah ta’ala loves the humble.”

A person can be better than an angel, but only after effort. And effort comes after self-assessment.

“We are too busy assessing other people’s lives, leaving no time to assess our own. We worry about everyone but ourselves. Faults of others register with us while our own do not. The makrooh tanzihi acts of others become apparent to us while our own haraam acts do not.”

“The easiest way to save yourself from deceiving yourself is by recognising yourself. And no one knows you better than you know yourself.”

“It is a ploy of Shaytaan that a religious person weighs his present life with his past life. If he does so, he will think himself to be a saint.”
