“A person once told me that he was so busy that he did not have any time for daily recitation of the Qur’an. I put the point to him that he did not possess a true appreciation of the Qur’an or a true sense of its importance. We all have countless things to do every day, yet if we can do them but not have time for the Qur’an, it is a sign that we do not give the Qur’an its due importance.

“Throughout the year a Hafiz (one who has memorised the Qur’aan) should endeavour to recite three Juz (chapters) daily.

A recommend method is the recite the Juz once whilst looking in the Qur’aan and twice in Salaah throughout the day.

Those who are not Huffaz, should aim to recite at least one chapter daily.”

“When a person wishes to become a political candidate and has ambitions of gaining a seat in the Houses of Parliament, he will go out of his way to try and please the local electorate.

Why will he undertake all this effort? In order to secure votes when the election comes.

But all this hard work may well go to waste and his dreams of becoming a member of parliament will amount to nothing if he does not win. (more…)

Once, when discussing the correct pronunciation of words in the Urdu language with his students, Shaykh commented:

“We find that those well acquainted with the Urdu language find it very distressing to hear someone incorrectly pronouncing words or mixing up plural and singular words.

Similarly, if someone incorrectly pronounces the words of the Qur’aan, he should  ask himself how his recitation would seem to Allah.”

Explaining the verse of Surah Zukhruf in which Allah ta’ala mentions those people who turn a blind eye to the ‘dhikr’, i.e. the Qur’an, Shaykh said:

“It does not only refer to the disbelievers of Makkah who turned away from the Qur’an, but also to those who, though they believe in the Qur’an, never read it or listen to it, and if they do read it, they make no effort to try to understand it or act upon the injunctions within.

“When the great scholar, Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah, rahamataullahi alyah would come across a verse of the Qur’aan which he would find some difficulty in understanding, then he would close his books and go outside.

He would roll around in the sand and adopt the state of a pitiful beggar. In this state he would then turn to Allah and say:

O the one who granted understanding to Suleyman, grant me understanding. O the one who taught Adam and Ibraheem teach me.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah would continue supplicating in this manner for a prolonged period.

And after this supplication Allah ta’ala would bless the Shaykh by directing him towards the right answer.”

“A poet has explained why Islam is the most distinguished of all religions by saying that”

‘Indeed are other religious teaching stored in books and compilations. But the teachings of Islam (i.e. the Qur’aan) are stored and safeguarded in the hearts.’

“When a person becomes a Sahib e Qur’aan then it is highly unlikely that he will fall into sin.

Imagine if a person is reading the Qur’aan whilst walking down the road will his attention be diverted towards anything else?”

“The great Shaykh Abrar ul Haq, rahmatullahi alayh had great reverence for the Qur’aan and would observe great respect for it. Amongst his statements are”:

‘No individual has the courage to sit upon the throne of a king. If someone does sit on the throne then he will be considered a criminal and his action will be considered a crime.

Likewise the Qur’aan is the king of all books and the Rihaal (stand) upon which it is placed is akin to a throne. Thus the Rihaal should not be used for anything else.’

‘Does anyone leave his children without clothes? Then how is it that we leave the Qur’aan without a covering?’

‘When we entertain important guests at our home, we ensure that we honour them by placing a special cloth upon which they can sit.

Likewise we should ensure that we place a cloth before we place a Qur’aan.’

“These Aadaab (etiquettes) are indeed very important and we should not think of them as insignificant.

For it is through such Aadaab that we will gain great spiritual elevation when reading the Qur’aan.”

“The Qur’aan should be read properly and correctly with ease in the Taraweeh Salaah. Remember it does not matter if one understands the Qur’aan or not.

For the Qur’aan is such, that even if one does not understand the words of the Qur’aan, it still has a great effect on the heart if recited properly.
