Genuine Humbleness Wednesday, November 11, 2009

“Pride and arrogance come in many forms. One manifestation of pride, which is not easily recognisable, takes the outward form of humility: some people feel the need to outwardly display humility while within they actually think highly of themselves for doing so.
People who are genuinely humble don’t have a high opinion of themselves, but truly believe themselves insignificant and humble. An analogy will help us understand what true humbleness is.
Imagine a sleeping person: while fast asleep he does not know that he is asleep; it is only after waking up that he realises that he had been asleep. Likewise, a person who is humble does not feel that he is being humble; his behaviour is naturally full of humbleness without him knowing it.”

“If a person assesses himself, he will find in himself some shortcomings and some good qualities. To create humility in our hearts we should attribute all the shortcomings in our lives to ourselves and we should attribute all the good qualities that we have to Allah ta’ala.
In other words, we should think that anything good we do is only through the Fadhl of Allah and whatever wrong or evil we see in ourselves is due to our own selves.”

“Whoever considers himself lowly and insignificant holds a high status in the eyes of Allah and the people. Whoever considers himself great is in reality low and insignificant.”

Allah ta’ala did not send us to this world to judge others. Allah ta’ala sent us into this world to judge ourselves and to identify and rectify our own shortcomings

“Because we live in technologically advanced times and because we may have achieved a degree or doctorate we begin to think of ourselves as great intellectuals.
We then begin to look down upon the Sahabah and belittle them.
Remember, the intellect of just Abu Bakr radiallahu anhu was so great that it would be sufficient to outweigh the collective intellects of all the intellectuals of our time.”

“Some commentators of the Qur’aan have quoted a narration which states that after being thrown into the fire of Jahannam Shaytaan will be taken out by Allah ta’ala and told that even now if he were to prostrate before Adam alayhis salam Allah ta’ala will forgive him.
But Shaytaan’s pride and arrogance is so great that despite tasting the punishment of Jahananum he will remain adamant and refuse to obey.”

“The key to progress is that one accepts his mistakes. And the main source of downfall is that one refuses to accept his mistakes.
Shaytaan did not prostrate when he was ordered to by Allah ta’ala and Adam alayhis salam ate from the forbidden tree when Allah ta’ala had ordered him not to. (more…)

“If a person does something with the intention that he is being humble, then this is not humility. True humility is that a person does not even realise that he is being humble.
The respected Shaykh Yusuf Ludhyanvi rahmatullahi alayh explains this by using the example of sleep. When one is truly asleep he does not realise that he is asleep.
Likewise when a person acquires true humility then his actions, his speech, and everything about him sparkles with humility. But this person does not even know that he is being humble.”
