“The way to create love for Allāh ta’ala is to worship and obey Him despite not wanting to. The inner self (nafs) needs to be compelled to obey Allāh ta’ala until it becomes a habit.

Once that happens, love for Allāh ta’ala will start being felt and inclination towards the sunan and nawāfil will develop.

Eventually, through the nawāfil (while maintaining absolute observance of the farā’idh and sunan), love for Allāh ta’ala will accelerate.”

“Fulfil your desires in lawful ways only. If you go along the path of unlawful fulfilment of desires, there will be no end to it. You will sin, thinking you will give up later, but it does not work that way.

Every time you give in to your nafs and commit a sin, you actually strengthen your nafs, so the next time it will be even harder for you to resist it. By fulfilling unlawful desires you strengthen your nafs and weaken yourself.

The only way to weaken the nafs is to resist it when it makes an unlawful demand.”

“The nafs, when it is under control, is like a snake frozen into inactivity in the winter. Giving in to one urge of the nafs is like taking hold of the snake and allowing the warmth of your hand to revive it and give it the chance to bite.

Take the example of someone who has controlled his desires and kept clean of drugs for a number of years. One day his nafs whispers to him, tempting and urging him to take drugs. If he gives in to the nafs – if he takes hold of the cold snake in his warm hand – and takes drugs, then he will end up at square one as an addict again.”

Our respected Shaykh hafizahullah once quoted the following saying of the famous Shaykh Dr Abdul Hay Arifi rahmatullahi alayh (translated to the nearest meaning):

“Shaytaan desires sin whereas nafs desires pleasure. This is why you should train your nafs to find pleasure in worship. Once it finds this it will not want to go anywhere else.

Thus, concentrate on developing pleasure in your worship’

“Regarding those sins that are related to carnal desires, the nafs deceives people by saying: “Do this sin just this once and then give it up for ever.”

In reality, by going ahead and committing the sin, its roots become stronger. By fulfilling your desires, they are not quenched but inflamed.”

“The nafs is like a lazy child. For it is always looking for excuses to get out of doing work.

Therefore one must be very strict with the nafs and ensure that one makes the nafs observe all that is required of it.”

“A friend of mine recently developed such a severe illness that he was informed that the only solution would be to travel via air ambulance to one of two specialist centres in America.

This cost him a quarter of a million pounds but because of the seriousness of the illness and his concern for his life he spent the money and made the long journey.

Likewise if we were to truly understand the lethal nature of our spiritual illnesses we would also undertake similar sacrifice.

We would also undergo journeys to the corners of the earth to benefit from the spiritual doctors who have the expertise to help cure the cancers of our heart.”

The great Khawajah Azeezul Hassan rahmatullahi alayh used to say in (poetic form) that;

‘The nafs is a constant danger. Even if it were to become like an angel don’t let it roam free.’

“When advised by a sincere elder, who we know well, to do something which we can’t comprehend immediately then we should tell ourselves that this gentleman is a well wisher of mine who has much more experience than me.

Thus instead of refusing his advice we should counsel ourselves that due my inexperience there must be something which I am overlooking in this matter. And this is why I can’t see what my well wisher can.”

“One of the reasons why the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam has encouraged fasting and moderation in eating is that hunger helps one to control his desires and curb his arrogance.

This is (also one of the reasons) why fasting is of benefit for those youngsters of marriageable age whose present circumstances are such that they can’t afford to get married.”
