“To control desires you need to: a) remember death frequently; and b) remember the reckoning in front of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa. In order to remember death you need to sit in the company of pious people, for how often does the topic of remembering death come up in our usual social circles?”

“Everyone should remember death for 15 minutes at least once every week. The easiest method is to set a time for yourself, e.g. every Thursday after dhikr. Death is the destroyer of desires, so keep on remembering it.  Ask yourself:

If I were to die right now, would I be able to show my face to Allah?

In which form would Munkar and Nakeer come to me?

Would I be given a place in the shade of Allah’s throne on the Day of Judgement or not?’

Whilst visiting someone for ta’ziyat recently, Shaykh mentioned:

“If we were involved in a court case and someone told us that if durood shareef is read 100,000 times we would be guaranteed to win the case, what would we do?

We would immediately start organising and distributing the recital of durood shareef between our friends and relatives in order to complete the required quantity.

The deceased is about to be summoned to the Court of Allah, but how much concern do we have for his success?”

“We never realise how old we have become. We need to realise that we are ageing and we need to prepare for the hereafter.

The various stages of the hereafter are to come, and Allah has created us for the hereafter.”

“We seldom visit the graveyard, but when we do happen to find ourselves attending a funeral, we have very little understanding of the significance of the janazah and burial.

The time of burial is a very important time for the deceased. He/she is about to enter a whole new world. It is a time when we need to assist the deceased as much as we can and not spend the time in futile or disrespectful activities.

Once our Shaykh commented:

“Whatever is inside will come out at the time of death. If Allah is in the heart, it will show at the time of death, and if love of the world is in the heart then that is what will preoccupy us.

Take the example of a parrot; you can teach it to say the word ‘Allah’ and it may say it all day long, but when a cat takes a pounce at it, it will show its true colours, i.e. it will resort to its natural voice and squawk in alarm.

It will not say the word ‘Allah’, as it was merely on its tongue, not in its heart.

So we have to strive to bring Allah into our hearts.”

“Our feet are hanging in our graves yet we continue to cast lustful gazes, we still have hatred in our hearts and we continue to indulge in all manner of sin.

Imagine if we die in this state what do we think awaits us in our graves? Ponder for a moment.

If we die like this, how will we be able to face Allah?”

“We should endeavour to perform all those deeds through which is has been narrated that a person can gain Jannah or the intercession of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam.

This is because a person will only be able to acquire these things if he dies with Iman.

Thus the implication is that whoever carries out these deeds will definitely die as a Muslim.”

“Prior to lecturing at a conference, the great Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyah rahmatullahi alayh was performing wudhu when he heard the conference co-ordinator praising him as part of the introduction.

The respected Shaykh began to shed tears and said,

My dear ones let me at least die first. If I die without Iman then what use will all of these praises be to me?

“If a person becomes involved in a court case, if he is afflicted with cancer or if his daughter is given talaaq, then he becomes so concerned that he asks everyone he knows to make dua.

But these are all small things compared to the worry we should have for a good death.”
