“When the opportunity arises to spend on worldly items, people normally do not find it burdensome and spend with an open and happy heart. But in a majority of cases they later regret their spending.

However, when you spend for the sake of Allah ta’ala in a virtuous cause, you may find it difficult at the time of spending, but later, when you reflect upon the favour that Allah ta’ala conferred on you by giving you the will to spend in His cause, you will experience extreme happiness for the rest of your life.”

“It is good to give zakah to madaris to help the students there who are not only poor but are also engaged in acquiring Islamic knowledge. However, there are other areas where zakah should be spent too.

In poor countries like India, many families do not own their own homes and if the husband were to die, his widow and orphan children would be left homeless to fend for themselves. Zakah should be given to such deserving families so they can secure a place to live before they fall prey to such problems.”

“It is mentioned in a hadeeth narrated by Abu Hurayrah radhiyallaahu anhu that sadaqah, spending in the path of Allah ta’ala, does not cause money to decrease. This may seem paradoxical, for if you spend, it is obvious that your money will decrease.

What the hadeeth means is that although when we spend in the path of Allah we see an immediate decrease in wealth, Allah ta’ala promises that He will increase our wealth in the long term as a result of our spending.”

“Allah ta’ala will repay us for our spending according to our sincerity: the more sincerity the greater the return. Likewise, the more the sacrifice the greater the reward.”

“Allah ta’ala says in the Qur’aan that Shaytaan promises us, i.e. he deceives us into thinking that if we spend in the path of Allah we will become poor.

He makes us think that by giving zakaah we will suffer loss. And if we do fulfill the fardh of zakaah then he prevents us from any further voluntary spending.

“Allah ta’aala is completely aware of everything in this world. Hence, Allah knows how much wealth is circulating in the hands of man, how much is being wasted and how many poor people there are in the world.

Allah ta’aala has made the system of zakaah to great precision; He has given wealth to the rich in such measure that if all the zakah due on it were collected, it would be sufficient to eradicate all poverty.”

“In comes in a hadeeth that there is reward for feeding any living thing. Just imagine, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam states that a prostitute from the Bani Israa’eel was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog.

More deserving than a dog is a human being who is hungry and thirsty, regardless of whether he is a Muslim or not.”

“One of the benefits of experiencing what hunger feels like is that one is able to remember those less fortunate than one’s self.

This in itself is a great deed.

This is because such experience will encourage one to help others (who may be undergoing hunger and starvation) when the need arises.”

“Not only (are we fortunate enough to have enough) wealth with which to support ourselves we also have money leftover which we can save.

Thus when the need to spend (in charity) arises we should try to spend as open heartedly as possible.”

“We are so neglectful towards the act of monetary worship that it is as though we don’t even consider it to be a virtue or a good deed.”
