“One of our pious predecessors was once walking with some of his students when he saw a scorpion drowning in some water. He looked around but could not find anything to lift the scorpion with so he tried to rescue it with his hands.

“In his later life, Shaykhul Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariya rahmatullahi alayh resided in Madeenah. He also passed away in the blessed city and his grave is in Jannatul Baqee beside the graves of the family members of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam.

One of the reasons why he was blessed which such a great gift was his adherance to the sunnah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam. Once on the day of Jumu’ah he wore a new upper garment.

“One night the mother of the great Shaykh Ba Yazid Bustami rahmatullahi alayh requested her son to bring some water for her.

Shaykh Ba Yazid immediately went to fulfil his mother’s request but upon his return he noticed that his mother had fallen asleep.

Rather than turning away the great Shaykh stood at his mother’s side, cup in all hand, waiting for his mother to awake.

The biographers of Shaykh Ba Yazid have written that it this great respect and reverence for his mother that helped the Shaykh achieve the lofty spiritual status for which he is now renowned.”

“The great Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal rahmatullahi alayh had great respect for the people of knowledge.

Once he was sitting whilst leaning on a support in a gathering, when someone mentioned Shaykh Ibraheem Ibn Tahman rahmatullahi alayh.

Immediately Imam Ahmad sat up and adopted a posture of great respect.

He then said that Shaykh Ibraheem is of such a high calibre that it is not appropriate for me to sit reclining when his name is mentioned.”

“When the great scholar, Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah, rahamataullahi alyah would come across a verse of the Qur’aan which he would find some difficulty in understanding, then he would close his books and go outside.

He would roll around in the sand and adopt the state of a pitiful beggar. In this state he would then turn to Allah and say:

O the one who granted understanding to Suleyman, grant me understanding. O the one who taught Adam and Ibraheem teach me.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyah would continue supplicating in this manner for a prolonged period.

And after this supplication Allah ta’ala would bless the Shaykh by directing him towards the right answer.”

“A smartly dressed and well spoken man once visited the court of Mamon Rasheed. The Caliph was impressed by the visitor’s learning and invited him towards Islam. The visitor politely declined for he was a Jew and did not wish to leave his ancestral religion.

A few months latter the man once again visited the court and this time it was obvious that he had accepted Islam. The Caliph asked the man what had been the cause of his reversion as he had not been inclined towards Islam on their first meeting.

“Allah ta’ala granted the renowned scholar Shaykh Abul Hassan Ali Nadwi rahamtullahi alayh such acceptance that once during the period of Hajj, the Imam of the Haram, Shaykh Khayyat, quoted the name of Shaykh Abul Hassan and a teaching from one of his books during the Friday Khutbah.

The great Shaykh upon hearing this began to shed tears of gratitude to Allah. Seeing his reaction the people around him asked him after the Salaah who Shaykh Abul Hassan was as they felt that he must be very close to him.

However such was his humility that those around him did not even realise that he was the very Shaykh whom the Imam had just quoted with such reverence and honour.”

“As a young child the renowned Shaykh Saadi rahmatullahi alayh had to opportunity to perform Itikaaf with his father. At Tahajjud time father and son awoke, read the Salaah of Tahajjud and made dua.

After completing their worship Shaykh Saadi said to his father, ‘These other people are so negligent that they are sleeping and not performing tahajjud.’

To this his father replied ‘Saadi, it would have been better had you slept the whole night than performed tahjjud.’ (more…)

“Shaykh Manzoor Numani rahamatullahi alayh once requested Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyyah rahmatullahi alayh to grant him permission to write a book outlining the great Shaykh’s qualities and achievements.

Shaykh Manzoor mentioned that he wished to do this so that people would be encouraged to benefit from the Shaykh as much as they could and thus not feel deprived upon the Shaykh’s demise.

In reply Shaykh Zakariyyah wrote:”

’Maulana Manzoor, neither I nor you know about how my life will end. If you write this book and I die without Imaan then this book will be of no use whatsoever.’

“Prior to lecturing at a conference, the great Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyah rahmatullahi alayh was performing wudhu when he heard the conference co-ordinator praising him as part of the introduction.

The respected Shaykh began to shed tears and said,

My dear ones let me at least die first. If I die without Iman then what use will all of these praises be to me?
