“The days of Dhul Hijjah of which Allah takes oath by; if it wasn’t for His Greatness, how could we ever reap the benefit of fasting.  Bear in mind that the reward of a single fast during these days is equal to the reward of fasting for an entire year! And by making Shukr; thanking Allah, we acknowledge His Magnificence, and this is what is required of us.

Expressing gratitude to Allah is the remedy of Self-Conceit (having an exaggerated sense of self-importance and the high ranks of one’s deeds). When a servant of Allah thanks Allah he cannot be proud of doing that good deed, because in reality it was done due to only Allah’s mercy and grace and its not by one’s own capabilities.

“The whole of Ramadhan was a spiritual tournament and the night of ‘Eed (i.e. the night before ‘Eed day) is when the winning team gets the prize.

And the way to tell if you are in the winning team is to assess whether you are given the ability to worship Allah ta’ala on this night.

There are two things we need to do on this night; the first is to refrain from sin and the second is to do a little bit of extra worship.

“The commands of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa fall under two categories: obligations, things we have to do, and prohibitions, things we are forbidden from doing. If we analyse the category of obligations, we can conclude that they too are prohibitions.

Take the example of the obligation to perform salah; it is in effect a prohibition against not performing salah. So the commands of Allah subhanahu wata‘alaa are all about abstaining from things.

A muttaqi is someone who abstains: when it comes to salah, someone who does not neglect salah is termed muttaqi with regards to salah.

“Whoever exerts effort to refrain from something impermissible is rewarded in one of two ways: either the impermissible thing is made permissible for him in some way, or he is given something better than it.”

“In order to truly benefit from the month of Ramadhan one needs to appreciate the true spirit and purpose of this great month.

The purpose of this great month is to help one weaken his connection with the world and to strengthen his connection with Allah ta’ala.

Thus for any worship performed in this month to be fruitful it needs to be driven and imbued with this spirit.”
