“Daily muhaasabah (stocktaking) of one’s deeds has many benefits. One of Shaytaan’s ploys is to make us concentrate on our good deeds, which leads to ‘ujb (vanity) and kibr (pride).

With daily muhaasabah, shukr (gratitude) for being given the ability to do good deeds increases, with the result that Allah ta’ala grants the ability to do more.

Secondly, acknowledging one’s bad deeds leads to regret and tawbah (repentance), and this leads to one’s sins being forgiven. In this way one keeps a clean slate.

Another benefit of muhaasabah is that it provides the opportunity to gauge the depth of sincerity of one’s good deeds and whether or not they were according to the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam.

The more sincerity and adherence to the Sunnah, the weightier the deeds will be on the Day of Reckoning.”

Masha allah! Very beneficial post. I have heard Shaykh say that it is the backbone of islah – self-rectification. I have also heard Shaykh say that from all the prescribed practices, it is the hardest one to carry out, because Shaytaan knows there is success in it for us.
