“Rassoolullah sallalahu alayhi wassalam said,

Whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah raises him [in rank], and whoever is arrogant, Allah degrades him. (Bayhaqi)

(Commenting on this hadeeth Shaykh highlighted the following points which will inshallah help one to become mutawadi`:humble)

“1) Sit in the company of the humble.  Your Shaykh is the best for this.

2) Be punctual with Zikr.  If you have Allah in your heart, automatically all the evils of the heart will be removed.

3) Remind yourself that you are sinful.

4) Think of your beginnings (a drop of dirty fluid).

5) Think of your end  (after you die, no one will want to be close to you, your body will rot, worms will eat your body, etc.).

6) Make du’a to Allah: “Allahumajalni sagheeran fi ayni wa kabeeran fi a`ayu ninaas.” (O Allah, make me small in my own eyes and great in the eyes of the people.)”

The heart that was meant for nothing but the love of Allah contains the love of everything but Allah.

The heart that was meant to be the slave of none but Allah has become the slave of everything but Allah.

“What use is a flower which is bereft of fragrance?

What use is a heart which is empty of Allah?”

“The honourable Shaykh, Haji Faruq rahmatullahi alayh used to say:

Annihilate your self (i.e. your nafs) to such an extent that you do not even realise that you are being humble.

“Taqwaa is not abundant worship, taqwaa is refraining from sins, both major and minor. With taqwaa, one’s heart is made grief-proof. As the respected Shaykh Hakim Akhtar hafizahullah says:

If the creation of Allah ta’ala can make a watch water proof, then cannot the Creator make the hearts of His friends (i.e. those who adopt taqwaa) grief-proof?

“If a person assesses himself, he will find in himself some shortcomings and some good qualities. To create humility in our hearts we should attribute all the shortcomings in our lives to ourselves and we should attribute all the good qualities that we have to Allah ta’ala.

In other words, we should think that anything good we do is only through the Fadhl of Allah and whatever wrong or evil we see in ourselves is due to our own selves.”

“Having good thoughts about a fellow Muslim brings reward while being suspicious of a fellow Muslim incurs sin; so why leave out what brings reward and do what invites the wrath of Allah ta’ala?

In fact, if someone else has done wrong then and made tawbah that person will have cleared his slate with Allah ta’ala, while we continue piling sins on ourselves by having  suspicious thoughts about him.”

“After a person repents from a sin he should remove it from his mind altogether. He should not even mention it to Allah, as it is now wiped out from his account.”

“Self-assessment leads to self-recognition and one who recognises one’s self, recognises Allah ta’ala. This is the first step to rectification. As one’s own faults and evils become apparent, one will not be proud; one will drown in humility and Allah ta’ala loves the humble.”

A person can be better than an angel, but only after effort. And effort comes after self-assessment.

“We are too busy assessing other people’s lives, leaving no time to assess our own. We worry about everyone but ourselves. Faults of others register with us while our own do not. The makrooh tanzihi acts of others become apparent to us while our own haraam acts do not.”

“A person who teaches you something, even if it is classed as something trivial, will be regarded as your teacher and must therefore be shown respect. Ali radiallahu anhu used to say:

Whoever taught me one letter is my master and I am his slave.

From this we learn how high a rank teachers have and how much we should respect them.”

“Those who have real concern for their own spiritual condition will be removed from the ditch they find themselves in and placed on a throne, whereas those who are not concerned will be taken off the throne they are on and placed into a ditch.”
