“It is a ploy of Shaytaan that a religious person weighs his present life with his past life. If he does so, he will think himself to be a saint.”

Advising an ‘aalim who had recently graduated, Shaykh said:

“It is good and acceptable for an ‘aalim to think that he is not doing enough to serve the Deen, and that he should do more and explore other avenues. However, he should not think that the current work of Deen he is doing is worthless.

“Allah ta’ala does not judge a person’s status by the amount of worship he does, but by how much a person stays away from the disobedience of Allah.

It is a deceit from Shaytaan that he confines our attention to the multitude of worship we do and keeps us heedless and unaware of the sins that we are committing.”

“When we go shopping, we spend without any reluctance. The thought of our wealth decreasing or of becoming poor does not enter our minds then.

However, if the opportunity to spend even five pounds in the masjid comes, many such thoughts come to mind and we are very reluctant to spend in the path of Allah.”

“If you have a problem, take it to your elders.  Nowadays, we don’t take our problems to our elders, and when we get caught making a mistake, we lie to them.

Remember, getting caught out doing something wrong is a blessing of Allah ta’ala, as it provides the opportunity to repent.”

” Placing the virtue of knowledge and the ‘ulama to one side for a moment, a true ‘aalim is one who does not regard himself to be an ‘aalim. The more a person’s knowledge increases, the more he will become aware of his own ignorance.  As his knowledge increases, he will accordingly become lower and lower in his own eyes.”

“Mawlana Shabbir Ahmad Uthmani rahmatullahi alayh used to say that if what a person says is ‘haq’ (truth), his intentions are ‘haq’ (sincere) and the method he uses is also ‘haq’, it will definitely have an effect on the listener.

As a  poet says:

Words that come from the heart, effect the heart.

“A lot of people talk about Adab without fully understanding what it really means. Adab is to behave in a way that makes the person you wish to respect feel comfortable and at ease.

If an ‘aalim [or any senior] prefers you to stand up every time he enters the room, then adab would mean you stand up when he walks in, as it would be give him comfort.

However, if an ‘aalim prefers you not to stand up when we enters the room, then to stand up would cause him discomfort and so be contrary to adab.”

True Loss, True Gain Saturday, May 16, 2009

“When we see our friends incurring spiritual loss due to omitting fara’idh or sunan, why do we not stop them or advise them? If we were to see them suffering worldly loss or if we were to see them falling into harm’s way, would immediately stop them.

We would immediately warn someone who was walking in the dark of the night and heading towards a ditch. If even a pound coin were to fall out of someone’s pocket we would stop and inform him.

However, when it comes to Deeni  issues we do not do the same. One of the main reasons is that we do not see Deeni loss as a real loss. It is not that we don’t have feelings for our fellow brothers, our problem is we don’t understand what loss and gain truly are.”

“Eating together in shared plates and remembering Allah ta’ala by saying Bismillah creates barakah (blessings) and leads to the development of love and unity. When hearts unite, Allah’s help descends and success follows in all matters, big and small, e.g. unity in masjids, homes, businesses, all deeni endeavours etc. Peace prevails and all matters become easy.
