“Allah ta’ala has ordered us to maintain good relations with our relatives. Maintaining these ties can take one of two forms.

The first is reciprocation. This means that if a relative is good to one then one is also good to him. This is a good deed and a means of virtue.

The second form however is of greater merit and is a means of greater reward. This is when one’s relations sever ties but one makes an effort to rejoin the bond of kinship.

It is this second form of maintaining relationships that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam has referred to as the real joining of ties.”
