“Allah ta’ala is the only One who is the Knower of the Unseen.

Thus it is only Allah who has precise knowledge of the condition of a person’s heart.

A Shaykh is not the knower of the unseen.

Emotions When Departing

“At the time of departure it is natural to feel grief as one leaves family and friends.

However, one should endeavour to keep a check on such emotions and show signs of happiness and joy.

This is because one is embarking on a journey towards the most blessed of lands.

“With regards Zikr what is required of us is that is that whenever we get the opportunity we should verbally remember Allah.

When our tongue is engaged in other work, we should aim to ensure that our heart and mind is constantly in His remembrance.

And in order to achieve this (second stage) we will need to strive and endeavour.”

“One should give a full and clear picture of his spiritual condition when consulting his Shaykh.

Selective disclosure will lead to an impediment in the Shaykh’s diagnosis of one’s spiritual ailments.”

The Guests of Allah

“It is only natural for those who are travelling to the Haramayn for the first time, to experience anxiety and feelings of unease at the time of departure.

Unfortunately these feelings are exacerbated by the many negative points one may hear from other prior to departure.

One should aim to remove excessive anxiety and trepidation by bearing in mind that any difficulty that may be encountered is minimal when compared to the great benefits of the journey.

For example what greater benefit and comfort can there be than seeing the Ka‘bah (House of Allah)?

My respected father, Haafiz Ibraheem Dhorat rahmatullahi alayh used to say that

‘A guest never needs to worry when visiting. All the guest is required to do is to mention his needs to his host and the host takes care of the rest.

Imagine, if a human takes such great care of his guests then with what care will Allah ta’ala, who is the Lord of all the worlds, treat his guests.’

If we do face some form of difficulty on the journey, we should understand that this is in reality the mercy of Allah.

For as mentioned in a hadeeth it is through such small difficulties that Allah ta’ala forgives sins.”

‘Never (is) a believer stricken with a discomfort, an illness, an anxiety, a grief or mental worry or even the pricking of a thorn but Allah S will expiate his sins on account of his patience.’ (Bukhari)

“It is narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam would remember Allah ta’ala at all times.

Given that the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam was human one may question as to how this constant remembrance was possible when he sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam also had other needs e.g. eating which needed to be fulfilled.

Firstly he must sincerely inform his Shaykh of every condition of the heart (with a view to seeking guidance).

This is known as Itilaa.

Companions on the Journey

“When choosing companions / a group with whom to travel with one should bear the following points in mind:

1. Aim to accompany those who are pious and experienced in the rituals of Hajj and Umrah.

Such company will encourage one towards worship and aid one in gaining the pleasure of Allah ta’ala.

Their experience will also make things easier for the novice.

“When a person is blessed with the concern of self-rectification, then he should thank Allah ta’ala for this great bounty.

Being grateful constitutes two things;

(1) Thanking Allah ta’ala verbally through words of thanks and praise.

(2) Thanking Allah ta’ala physically by adopting the necessary elements and actions required to purify one’s nafs.”
