I Can’t Understand Monday, May 26, 2008

“Once the renowned, Shaykh Haji Imdadullah rahamatullahi alayh gave Shaykh Qasim Nanotwi rahmatullahi alayh a manuscript to review. Shaykh Qasim was a student of Shaykh Haji Imadadullah and a great scholar as well.

It so happened, that Shaykh Qasim noticed a spelling mistake on one line. But out of respect for his Shaykh, Shaykh Qasim deemed it disrespectful to changes the words which his Shaykh had written.

Shaykh Qasim also did not want the error to go unnoticed for this would mean that an error would remain in the final manuscript.

Thus Shaykh Qasim said to Shaykh Imdadullah that my dear Shaykh, the manuscript is very good but there is one line which I can’t understand.

Shaykh Imdadullah read the sentence, noticed the mistake and immediately changed it. The great Shaykh had also immediately understood the rationale behind his great student’s actions.

Thus he would often say that

If anyone wishes to learn Adab then he should learn it from Maulana Qasim Nanotwi.
