“Dawood alayhis salam was a great king and a great prophet of Allah ta’ala. On occasions he would travel throughout his kingdom in disguise to ascertain what the people thought about him.

He did this in order to identify any faults which needed to be rectified. However, such was his fairness that during his travels he would only hear good things.

In order to test Dawood alayhis salam Allah ta’ala once sent an angel in the form of a human being. Dawood alayhis salam met this angel while he was incognito and asked him what he thought about the king.

The angel said that Dawood is a very good person. But he has one weakness and that is he uses the public funds for his personal needs.

Immediately Dawood alayhis salam turned to Allah and asked Allah to grant him a method of earning wealth so that he would no longer need to take a salary from the public treasury.

Upon this Allah ta’ala granted Dawood alayhis salam the ability to mould iron with his hands. Thus he would produce suits of armour and sell them.

However the great Prophet did not utilise this great ability to amass wealth. He would only sell one suit of armour per day and earn enough money to support his family.

That money which would remain thereafter he would spend on the poor.”
