“In our time there are various avenues e.g. websites from which knowledge can be acquired.

Remember it is extremely necessary to acquire knowledge of deen from reliable sources. Our pious predecessors used to say that Ilm (knowledge) is deen.

Therefore one should exercise great caution with regards the sources from where he attains Ilm.”

“Once a student of Shaykh Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi rahmatullahi alayh asked another Scholar about the Sunnah method of performing a particular action.

The Shaykh being acquainted with Shaykh Rasheed Ahmed’s adherence to the Sunnah replied that have you seen Shaykh Rasheed Ahmad doing this action?

The student replied in the affirmative. Upon this the Shaykh commented that

“A person can only become punctual upon observing his daily practices (mamoolaat) if he exerts a determined effort. With effort even difficult things become easy.

Take the example of a house wife. She has so many things to do during the day. She cooks, she clean, and she takes care of the children.

Despite the pressure of the various tasks she never misses out what she needs to do. Why is this?

“Not only (are we fortunate enough to have enough) wealth with which to support ourselves we also have money leftover which we can save.

Thus when the need to spend (in charity) arises we should try to spend as open heartedly as possible.”

“The Mashaaikh emphasise, that one should abstain from habitually adopting the company of the impious unless there is a need.

For example it is necessary for a doctor to mix with a variety of patients as part of his profession.

However because there is a specific need for and objective of these interactions (it is unlikely that such interactions) will be spiritually harmful.”

“Rabee Ibn Khatham rahmatullahi alayh was a very pious Tabiee (Tabiee: a person who had been blessed with seeing one of the Companions of the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam).

It was his habit that if he found that his heart had become negligent as a result of mixing with people he would visit the graveyard to remove this negligence.

From this we learn that the company of impious people has a great effect on our hearts.”

“Sometimes when we have a difference with someone, we go to such extremes that it becomes as though we have the right to do whatever we wish without any fear of Allah.

This is why my respected father (rahmatullahi alayh) used to say that

When we have a dispute with someone we violate his rights so much that on the day of Qiyamah this one person alone will take away all our good deeds as compensation.

“A person should be extremely vigilant with regards refraining from all that is disliked within the Shariah.

This is because when one is in the habit of abstaining from disliked actions (makrooh), then he will make an even greater effort to abstain from that which is forbidden.

Likewise one should try to practice upon each and every recommended and desired action (sunnah and mustahab). For the one who observes such diligence will obviously make a greater effort to carry out that which is compulsory.”

“Today in our society, we can witness a miracle of the Qur’aan with our own eyes. This miracle is exemplified by the numerous young children who memorise the Qur’aan.

Despite being discouraged from certain quarters these youngsters remain steadfast, overcome and the pressures and temptations around them and achieve their goal.

These young people know how much free time their peers, who are not engaged in this pursuit, have. Yet they continue to sacrifice and work hard to achieve their goal.

“It is mentioned in a hadeeth that

Verily Allah likes to see the signs of his gifts on his servant.

Thus one should not adopt unnecessary austerity. For example if one has been blessed with wealth he should purchase reasonable clothes.

However one should also ensure that he is not wasting money. To differentiate between these two extremes one should bear the following principle in mind.
