“When the Companion Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf radiallahu anhu migrated to Madinah the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam made him the brother of an Ansari Companion.
The Ansari Companion knew that Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf had left everything behind in Makkah and thus had no resources in Madinah whatsoever.
As a result the Ansari Companion immediately offered his new brother half of his wealth.
Abdur Rahman Ibn Auf however politely declined this great gesture and asked his brother where the market was so that he could begin to trade and earn for himself.
We learn from this incident two very important lessons. The first is the profound love and brotherhood that existed amongst the first generation of Muslims.
The second is that the Companions were very independent and hardworking. They did not depend on others and take things for granted.”
