“Through the Holy Qur’an and ahadeeth Allah ta’ala has revealed the commandments of Purdah (to veil and conceal oneself) for the benefit of both men and women.
A mahram is defined as a member of the opposite sex whom one can marry according to the injunctions of Islam.
It has been commanded for women not to gaze at non-Mahram men and for men not to gaze at non-Mahram women.
Rasullullah sallahu alayhi wasallam has stated:
‘Protect the gaze because the gaze is a poisonous arrow from amongst Shaytaan’s many arrows.’
When Shaytaan wants a person to indulge in lustful activity, the first thing he will make a person commit is the sin of unlawful gazes.
Thus when a person walks on the road, Shaytaan tempts a person through his gaze. But remember the eye is the doorway to the heart.
Even though one may think that he is only looking, in reality all these impermissible gazes are imbedding impermissible desire in his heart.
Hence, the Holy Qur’an commands:
‘Tell the Believing men that they must lower their gazes and guard their private parts; it is more decent for them. Surely Allah is all aware of what they do.And tell the Believing women that they must lower their gazes, guard their private parts and not expose their adornment.’
