With regards controlling the tongue Shaykh advised that we should follow the instructions given by the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam . In one hadeeth the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam mentioned (to the nearest meaning) that
“Control your tongue and do not leave your home without necessity”.
Shaykh explained that this means that we should not mix with people without necessity for there are many advantages to this:
“Firstly one will be saved from many sins of the tongue such as backbiting, and slander. Sins such as these are usually undertaken when people meet up with each other and begin to discuss issues and things with which they have no concern.
Secondly, one will be able to spend quality time with one’s family Why is it that when planning a holiday trip the whole family can sit together and discuss the pros and cons, yet we have no time when it comes to planning for the Hereafter. Remember, a Mu’min loves and wishes to be loved. This is a natural element within us. Our children too need love and we should remember that if they do not get love at home they will naturally seek it outside the home. This could turn out to be very detrimental for them and us. If we don’t make time for our children then don’t be surprised if they don’t any have time for us.
Thirdly, one will be able spend some time in seclusion and contemplate upon the bounties of Allah ta’ala. Spending a few minutes daily in order to concentrate upon and think about the blessings of Allah ta’ala is an action full of benefits. And it is this which will eventually lead to one attaining the sweetness of the love of Allah ta’ala”
