Imaan, Islaam & Ihsaan Thursday, June 8, 2006

Last week, Shaykh mentioned a famous Hadeeth where Angel Gibraeel came to Prophet Sallahu alayhi wassallam in a gathering with the Sahaabah radhiyallahu ta’aalaa anhum, and he asked three questions: What is Imaan? What is Islaam? And what is Ihsaan? Shaykh very briefly explained that Imaan was Aqaaid which are the beliefs; Islaam was the good deeds that have to be performed i.e saalah, zaakah, etc. And finally Shaykh explained in a short and sweet fashion that Ihsaan is Tassawwuf. Now that’s enlightenment!

Shaykh further elaborated to the nearest meaning that I could interpret is: that when a person enters Tassawwuf they are constantly checking themselves regarding their Imaan and Islaam, for example: a person might think ‘Alhumdullillah I prayed my salaah, but how much Ikhlaas (sincerity) did I have?’ So without Ihsaan your Imaan and Islam will have defects in them.’

The reason I have written this is that many a time it can be difficult to explain what Tassawuf is to other Muslims, but this Hadeeth is perfect to use because it covers the whole Deen, and a good platform to then talk about spiritual purification. The enlightenment that has come from our Shaykh and the interpretation of this Hadeeth as: Ihsaan (Tassawuf) is the thermometer for your Imaan and Islam.

May Allah grant Shaykh Muhammad Saleem Dhorat a long life with health and may he see the fruits of his labour in this world all the way to Jannatul Firdaws. Aameen.

Regarding the posting “Iman, Islam & Ihsaan”, it is “enlightenment indeed” from our beloved Hadrat Shaykh!
This reminded me of my long search for the “deep and unfathomable secrets of sufism/tasawwuf”. Every available book on the subject was enthusiastically bought and read.  Windows with rays of enlightenment opened up when through the fadl of ALLAH TA’ALA the connection was made with Hadrat Shaykh Muhammad Salim Dhorat.  Tasawwuf is nothing extraordinary; To do mujahadah to fulfil the commands of ALLAH TA’ALA and to refrain from HIS disobedience in our day to day life is tasawwuf!
